Nexus One

Nexus One shipping to Canada, now compatible with AT&T 3G

We were wondering when Google would announce the version of the Nexus One which passed through the FCC recently with support for additional WCDMA bands. Here’s the answer:

Starting today, an additional version of the Nexus One is available from the Google web store that is compatible with AT&T’s 3G network. This new model can be purchased as an unlocked device without a service plan. In addition to AT&T’s 3G network, this device will also run on Rogers Wireless in Canada. And like the first version of the Nexus One, it can be used with most GSM operators globally.

Google will continue their gradual roll out of the Nexus One with both Verizon and Vodafone UK expected make announcements some time in the next few weeks. Initial sales of the device are reported to be relatively slow and increasing availability and compatibility will be crucial in building some sales momentum, as Google’s Nexus One marketing campaign has so far been virtually non-existent.

Possible Nexus One with AT&T 3G support passes through the FCC

A new handset from HTC bearing a model number very similar to the Nexus One, has just passed through the FCC. The test documents reveal very little about the phone, as HTC has as usual requested that the FCC keep all details confidential. The model number of the device is PB99110 (the Nexus One carries the model number PB99100) and will support Quad-Band GSM, WCDMA bands I, II and V, Bluetooth and WiFi 802.11b/g.

Google have said that they will be expanding their Nexus One offering to support a wider range of networks and carriers and it looks like this could be a first step towards that. The added support for WCDMA II and V means that this handset will be able to use AT&T’s 3G network in the U.S. It will also support other 3G networks using these bands like Telstra Australia’s Next-G, Rogers of Canada and all carriers in Latin America.

Those hoping for a Verizon or Sprint version of the phone will have to wait a bit longer however as this filing shows no support for their CDMA network. Google have said that they will have a CDMA compatible version of the handset available in the spring.

Nexus One - US customers already receiving handsets, but what about the rest of the world?

Google launched their new smartphone, the Nexus One yesterday and US customers who ordered the same day should already be taking delivery of their new phone via next day delivery. For those outside the US wondering about availability of the device here’s some answers to the questions that we’ve been getting regarding when, where and for how much?

Availability

Google is currently shipping the phone to just 4 countries. The US (obviously), the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore. Frustrating as it may be if you’re living outside of one of these 4 countries you won’t be able to access Google’s web store even though the phone is likely to work in your country. If you’re after a Nexus One handset and do live in one of these countries then you can order today and have the phone shipped via courier. There’s a charge for shipping to the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore (around $30) and you’ll may also have to pay some tax to the courier when the phone arrives depending on what country you live in.
